Environmental Science, BS

Our award winning, nationally recognized BS in Environmental Science program is grounded in the natural sciences integrating biology, chemistry, physics, and geology with the social sciences to prepare the next generation of innovators and knowledge creators. Students gain essential skills in ecology, geology, hydrology, and marine science and apply these skills to critical challenges facing coastal marine systems in the Boston metropolitan area. Through coursework, our senior capstone course, internships, research, and cooperative education programs, students apply their knowledge to real-world problems in collaboration with our many public and private partners. Majors can focus their studies on the earth systems (Earth and Hydrologic Science Track), coastal oceans (Marine Science Track), or on the science-policy interface (Policy and Management Track).

What the School Offers to Ensure Your Success

Our Academic Achievement Services Center (AASC@SFE) offers a breadth of programs and activities designed to support you in your journey. Whether you seek additional support for your classes, want to explore internships or research, or merely want to more deeply engage with our alumni or fellow students, AASC@SFE is always here for you.  AASC@SFE offers support and connections for advising, student support (academic, financial, health), career services and opportunities, access to Living-Learning Community programs, and Student Clubs and Organizations.

What You Can Take

The BS in environmental science provides students the opportunity to focus their studies, through degree tracks, in marine science, policy & management, and earth & hydrologic science.  Students may also pursue a general track allowing them to take a breath of courses across the environmental disciplines.

Current students in all track programs should refer to the undergraduate student handbook for the year they enrolled in the program.

What You Will Learn

After completing your requirements in the BS in environmental sciences you will have deep and practical knowledge of earth and marine systems science. You will have the quantitative skills needed to advance discovery and create new knowledge, you will know how to visualize and communicate complex data, and you will have the hands-on experiences to support stewardship and sustainable management of natural resources.

What You Can Do with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Science

BS Environmental Science alumni leverage their deep understanding of the interactions between and within earth systems to advance discovery about our world’s land and ocean ecosystems, to conserve and protect our natural resources, and to innovate new technologies to ensure sustainability of our blue planet. Alumni are employed by government agencies as field and lab scientists, in private businesses as lab and field researchers, and in nonprofits as researchers, data analysts, and environmental educators. Alumni are also well positioned for advanced degrees in the environmental and marine sciences.
